Solution & Results

Walker drew on its deep environmental engineering expertise to develop a remediation plan. This consisted of implementing a groundwater containment wall system between the site and adjacent river, construction of a new leachate collection system, and installation of a wetland storm management system, which all contributed to stabilizing the surrounding environment.

Walker helped the City bring the landfill site into compliance with Provincial standards and was able to repurpose the landfill for acceptance of contaminated soils and demolition materials. The reserved landfill capacity for brownfield waste also provided incentive for local development.

Walker built and established a partnership with the City of Welland that turned a $25 million liability into an $8 million revenue through the reuse of an industrial landfill site. The remediation efforts saved taxpayers by removing an annual maintenance expense of up to $250,000. Through proper monitoring and controls established by Walker, the site will have no negative impact to the environment and surrounding water sources for future generations.
