Soil Solutions

Supporting Sustainable Agriculture & Horticulture

Walker has decades of experience recovering resources for a greener future. With two composting facilities in Ontario and resource recovery businesses across Canada, Walker proudly transforms organic waste into high-performing compost, fertilizer and soil products that support sustainable growing and contribute to the circular economy.

Walker is Canada’s largest resource recovery processor

Enhancing Soil Health with Compost

Walker partners with municipalities and customers to process the communities organic waste into CQA-certified, AA Compost by adhering to the highest standards of quality. The finished product is then used in farming, community parks, and resident’s flower and vegetable gardens across Ontario, supporting soil health and the circular economy.

Our composting facilities in Ontario utilize the GORE® Composting System, a cutting-edge technology designed to efficiently transform organic materials, including food scraps and yard trimmings, into high-quality compost while minimizing environmental impact. This system uses a controlled aerobic process designed to regulate temperature, moisture, and airflow, ensuring optimal conditions for consistent, nutrient-rich compost suitable for agricultural use.

Fertilizer you’ll be Proud to put on your Fields

In addition to composting, Walker partners with municipalities to safely manage their communities biosolids in an environmentally responsible way. Using our patented N-Viro technology, our process refines the valuable resources recovered from organic waste to create a sustainable, low-cost fertilizer, called N-Rich®.

For over 30 years, N-Rich® has been building healthy, nutrient-rich soils as a federally registered premium agriculture fertilizer. It’s used as a local alternative amendment to traditional chemical fertilizers and helps build soil health and optimize crop yields.

Products that Enhance Soil Health and Optimize Plant Production

The benefits of transforming organic waste go beyond waste diversion. Not only does it help significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and bolster the circular economy, these recovered end-products also foster plant growth naturally and improve soil health.

Compost and fertilizer are important inputs for providing nutrients to plants, with each playing a crucial role in enhancing and maintaining soil health. These sustainable ingredients can be used to improve soil condition and crop productivity in various ways, including:

  • Increasing organic matter in soil
  • Improving crop and soil resilience
  • Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers
  • Enhancing microbial activity in soil

Soil health is not just important for growing, it’s critical for the sustainability of our future. As a fifth-generation family-owned company in Canada, Walker remains committed to developing sustainable products that build greener communities and benefit the environment.

Growing Media that Supports the Circular Economy

As the largest soil and mulch producer in Ontario, Gro-Bark®, a Walker brand, actively seeks ways to transform waste into usable products for agriculture, horticulture and landscaping customers. Leaf and yard compost and clean forestry by-products are repurposed in bulk soil and mulch production, as well as grower and greenhouse mixes.

Walker’s team of technical experts offer reliable guidance in soil health planning and custom growing media for growing professionals. Walker also helps close the loop by safely repurposing hydroponic stone wool substrates into landscape soil amendments using GORE® composting technology, effectively diverting this waste stream from landfills.
