MEDIA RELEASE: Walker Seeks Approval of its Terms of Reference for The Next Phase of its South Landfill

[NIAGARA FALLS, ON] June 25, 2024 – Walker Industries (Walker) announces the submission date of its Terms of Reference (ToR) for the future development of its South Landfill located in Niagara Falls.  The Terms of Reference are an important first step in the Environmental Assessment (EA) process, overseen by the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservations, and Parks (MECP).  Walker will submit its ToR to MECP on June 28, 2024.

On March 7, 2024, Walker released a draft ToR for public review and feedback. Since then, Walker has engaged and consulted with the local community, government agencies, Indigenous communities, and all key stakeholders to incorporate input received to its ToR.  If approved by the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks, the ToR will serve as the working plan for the range of studies to be conducted and consultation activities to be undertaken by Walker in preparation of its Environmental Assessment report.

The South Landfill, a key component of Walker’s fully integrated Resource Management Campus, is expected to reach its final disposal capacity in 5-7 years. The development of the next phase will secure 20 years of continued landfill capacity and while providing an additional source of renewable energy from waste.

Mike Deprez, Vice President, Waste Services & Business Development at Walker expresses the importance of the future development for Niagara, “For over forty years, Walker has played a key role in helping the community manage waste through safe, affordable, and reliable disposal services for residents and businesses. This starts with good planning and community involvement. We’ve listened to the community, incorporated feedback and prepared a Terms of Reference that will serve as a robust guide for the upcoming environmental studies that will ensure the next phase of the South Landfill can be safely developed.”

The ToR will be publicly available for review from June 28 to July 30, 2024, on Walker’s South Landfill Phase 2 website: www.southlandfillphase2.com and at the following locations during regular business hours:
