Walker and the City of Greater Sudbury Celebrate 10 Years of Environmental Innovation and Partnership

GREATER SUDBURY, ON Walker Industries (Walker) celebrates 10 years of collaboration with the City of Greater Sudbury, transforming the city’s wastewater solids into a valuable and sustainable agricultural fertilizer – a milestone that underscores the power of innovation, environmental responsibility, and collaboration.

Since 2015, Walker’s partnership demonstrates how municipalities and private industry can work together to create long-term, sustainable, and environmentally responsible solutions that benefit communities and the planet.

Through the patented N-Viro® process, Walker transforms biosolids into a high-quality, sustainable fertilizer. The product (N-Rich®) is a mixture of the bio-solids collected from the wastewater, and lime by-products.

“This partnership has exemplified what’s possible when innovation meets shared environmental responsibility,” said Joe Rocca, General Manager of Growth and Infrastructure for the City of Greater Sudbury. “Transforming wastewater into a product that supports agriculture and land reclamation reflects our commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking infrastructure solutions.”

N-Rich® products are sold across the country to the agricultural community and are a sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional chemical fertilizer. In Greater Sudbury, N-Rich® is also used for mine reclamation projects, to restore former mining lands to new life.

“We are excited to be celebrating this milestone, partnership and shared commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Geoff Boyd, Vice President, Resource Recovery of Walker’s Environmental Division. “Recycling the wastewater byproduct into a sustainable, affordable, high-quality fertilizer is a real-world example of the circular economy in action.”

Comprised of licensed wastewater operators, logistics and operations specialists and agrologists, Walker’s biosolids team operates at the highest standard. With operations across Ontario and in Nova Scotia and P.E.I., Walker processes more than 100,000 tonnes of biosolids annually, displaying national leadership in biosolids innovation.
