Walker Begins Next Step in its Environmental Assessment for Future Development of its South Landfill

NIAGARA, ON (Oct. 17, 2024) – Walker Industries (Walker) today announced the notice of commencement of its Environmental Assessment (EA) as the next step in the South Landfill (Phase 2) planning process.

Walker’s South Landfill (Phase 1) plays an important role in helping the community manage waste that isn’t reused or recycled. It is also a key part of Walker’s Resource Management Campus which includes a composting facility and renewable energy facility. As the current phase nears final capacity, Walker is proposing to develop the next phase of the South Landfill, Phase 2, to continue to provide safe, affordable, and reliable waste disposal capacity.

“As the Niagara region continues to grow, Phase 2 will continue to provide essential waste management services, renewable energy and sustain more than 500 jobs locally,” mentioned Darren Fry, Project Director for Walker Industries.”

As part of the Provincial planning process under the Environmental Assessment Act, Walker has initiated an environmental assessment to determine how the project can be safely developed. This study will assess the potential effects of the proposed landfill continuation on the environment and surrounding community.

“Walker values the safety and sustainability of the community and the environment,” said Fry. “The Environmental Assessment will include studies of the surrounding environment and community and will be able to provide us, with confidence, an assessment on any impact the project could have and recommendations on how any impacts can be mitigated.”

As part of our commitment to incorporate community input into the project, Walker is seeking applications from members of the public to establish a South Landfill Phase 2 Environmental Assessment Advisory Committee to gather feedback, ideas, and local perspectives. This committee will play an important role in ensuring the next phase of the South Landfill considers local community perspectives.
